conceived by london based roger wade, ‘boxpark’ is a temporary shopping center located within the shoreditch district in london, england. british practice waugh thistleton architects designed this premier ‘pop-up mall’ constructed of shipping containers and positioned the structure within the former railway goodsyard.
How was boxpark made?
When Boxpark Shoreditch opened in 2011 it was the world’s very first pop-up shopping mall. The idea was surprisingly simple – create a retail park made entirely from repurposed shipping containers. Shipping containers had already found a strong foothold in the world of architecture.

The use of shipping containers is an intrinsic component of the Boxpark brand. We used 96 containers in total and only 4 of them are unaltered. Additionally, we introduced new materials such as the polycarbonate roof supported by a steel roof structure and integrated them into the core Boxpark design language.
