Tips across Kirklees will re-open on Monday 11 May but anyone who wants to visit must follow new strict rules. There are five sites across Kirklees which operate from 8am to 5pm on weekdays. On Saturday they are open from 8am to 4pm and on Sunday from 9am until 4pm.

Plasterboard is accepted at every HWRC. Visitors wishing to dispose of mixed chargeable waste (e.g. tiles with plasterboard attached) must separate them prior to visiting the HWRC so they can be disposed of separately. The removal of tiles from plasterboard may be made easier if soaked in water.

Why can’t I take plasterboard to the tip?
It is the gypsum in the plasterboard that has forced the current plasterboard waste management regulations. This is because when gypsum is disposed of alongside biodegradable wastes it can lead to the production of odorous and toxic hydrogen sulphide gas.
Why are there no plasterboard skips?
Due to plasterboards gypsum content, it contains lots of sulphates, that when mixed with general waste and rubbish creates a chemical compound known as H2S, hydrogen sulphide. When this is allowed to happen and it gets wet, the plasterboard goes through the process of creating H2S which is called putrefaction.
When does Kirklees recycling centre close for winter?
Over the winter period the centres close one hour earlier during weekdays because of shorter daylight hours – closing at 4pm rather than 5pm. All the sites will be open as follows from October 28: Weekday opening – 8am to 4pm; Saturday – 8am to 4pm; Sunday – 9am to 4pm
